The 20-year old avoided jail time even though a search on his phone and laptop showed he had downloaded over 45,000 pictures of child porn over the darkweb.

A 20-year old pedophile caught with over 45,000 images depicting child in sexually abusive situations has been given a suspended sentence of nine months in Teesside Crown Court recently.

The Darlington resident, Ethan Chapman, became a suspect in an investigation conducted on darkweb forums by the National Crime Agency. Chapman became a person of interest after investigators found about 45,651 images of child porn, about 36,186 of them being of the worst known category of child abuse on his mobile phone and personal laptop back in August of 2018.

He was questioned and in January this year, admitted in court to three counts of making indecent images of children, of varying categories. His sentence, suspended for the next eighteen months was followed with other stipulations he has to follow – including registering as a sex offender for the next five years and obey a five-year sexual harm prevention order.

Speaking on the issue, Graham Ellis, Operations Manager of the NCA shared this,

Every child in an abuse image is re-victimised when the photograph is viewed or shared. Chapman’s use of the dark web shows a degree of sophistication and a determination to avoid law enforcement detection. Dark web child sex offenders – some of whom are the very worst offenders – cannot hide from law enforcement.
