Dark Web

The company, which averages about 120 million viewers per day globally will now be available over the dark web via the TOR browser

In rather interesting news, the popular pornography website Pornhub has launched a TOR mirror site to widen its reach and make content more accessible to users in countries where the site is censored. It is important to note that this will enable users to access videos and pornographic material that might otherwise be flagged in their countries or tracked by law enforcement.

This service can only be accessed via the TOR browser, which works mainly as a re-router of sorts to ensure that users browsing activity cannot be tracked by both the websites accessed or a possible tracker, including crawlers amongst many others.

Pornhub said about the change that this would better protect the interests and viewing choices of its members within the LGBT community,

The move serves to bolster user privacy, ensure network security, and alleviate concerns about browsing habits among LGBT users whose preferences remain criminalized in certain countries.

The service will now be available on the dark web via the .onion URL http://pornhubthbh7ap3u.onion/

The company self-described as “the premier online destination for adult entertainment” shared that this step was taken after consideration was given to the privacy needs of customers “to protect them from hackers and safeguard against unwarranted surveillance”. They shared in a blogpost put up on their official website that this follows several efforts initiated by the group to do the aforementioned including setting up a VPN to protect users’ identity and avoid possible restrictions, as well as accepting cryptocurrency for payment of content to allow users anonymously purchase content.

Vice President of the company, Corey Price said,

Here at Pornhub, we are privacy-conscious and dedicated to ensuring the confidentiality of our users. As ill-willed hackers and compromising surveillance practices become growing concerns, it’s important that we set up internal safeguards to help anonymize the online activity and communication of our users and keep their personal information and digital footprint free from prying eyes.

He further cited how other companies including BBC, Facebook, and The New York Times have joined the TOR mirror service and have since been successful in integrating their services for users across the world and thereby ensuring their users enjoy a private, secure and anonymous service.

So far, the company has redacted some of the services offered on the website including account login and user upload functions, but Pornhub says this will not negate the service and users will still be able to enjoy the available services at an even more secure rate now. The new onion site can be accessed via the URL: http://pornhubthbh7ap3u.onion/

User feedback as always is important in a transition such as this, and while some have shared their elation with this new addition, others have raised concerns that this might make it even more easier for pedophilia and pedophilic content to be consumed and shared over the dark web.

Great to see the likes of PornHub joining our onion space. Facebook, Time, BBC, and more will soon make an examplary case as to why the world needs Tor. Thank you PornHub for years of contribution in the freedom of speech space.
